Grampa Ate My Socks

Every missing sock in a house has to go somewhere. This song has a theory, and it involves Grampa.

Potty Party

Potty training takes a lot of patience and a lot of sitting on the bathroom floor. This song turns the scariest seat in the house into a party.

I wrote these for Snips Tips, a kids' cooking show that hasn't come out yet. The songs got tired of waiting.

Who is Dylan & Keats?

Just me. I'm Kellen, and I write songs for my kids.

The name is borrowed from two of the best lyricists who ever lived, Bob Dylan and John Keats. Both of them would be ashamed to find their names on a song about the potty. Sorry, gentlemen.

The songs start at home, usually in the middle of whatever battle we're having that week. Bath time, or a missing sock. If a song makes it out of our kitchen, it ends up here.

For the grown-ups

The kids can go play the robot. This part is for you.

Hi, grown-ups.

I should tell you up front that I am not a parenting expert. I lose my temper sometimes, and I make most of this up as I go. A lot of these songs started on hard days, when something small turned into something big and singing was the only idea I had left.

Sometimes it works. A silly song breaks the standoff and somebody laughs. Sometimes it doesn't, and I say sorry later. I'm learning that the sorry matters more than the song.

The songs are for kids. They're silly on purpose and catchy enough to follow you around the grocery store, and I apologize for that in advance. I write them for you too, though. For the parent standing in the hallway at 7:45 wondering why this is so hard. You are doing better than you think.

Kellen

Cover of Max and the Dragon by Kellen Powers: a bearded dad in a dim hallway smiles down at his son while a small glowing flame curls between them. Tagline: a story about getting it wrong, and getting better, together.

I wrote a picture book too. It comes from the same place as the songs: the hard moments at home, and what happens after. It's meant to be read out loud, at bedtime, with somebody small leaning on your arm.
